wait, hasn't she already been on your cover?

I love shooting our covers...with models. They fit the fashion. They know how to move. They're willing to take chances with hair and makeup.  And we always get great covers. Today we photographed Lydia Hearst at Aesthesia Studios in Culver City with photographer Tracey Morris. It's our second time having Lydia on the cover. Only three girls have been on more than once. Dita Von Teese and Jessica Alba were the other two. Lydia's such a sweet easy-going girl. You'd never know, well, aside from looking just like her mother, Patty Hearst, that she's one of the heirs to the Hearst publishing fortune. See that six-figure necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels draped on her neck, um, yeah, she could pretty much buy that with her lunch money.

Today was also a day of getting ready for our big issue release event at the Luxe Hotel on Rodeo Drive hosted by our gorgeous cover model, actress Katheryn Winnick. A lot time was spent planning our Carmen Steffens' shoe collection fashion presentation. Creating a fashion show or presentation is basically like doing a shoot. There's models to book (All from Wilhelmina—thanks James!); Hair and makeup and stylist to bring on board; and coordination of the fashion and shoes. No doubt all will go flawlessly. Today was also a day filled with, "Are you kidding me?" stories. But more on those later. Maybe after the party.

My favorite hair stylist Robert Steinken working on Lydia's locks today. That's all her own hair! That necklace (which you can't see so well because my photo sucks) is from Van Cleef & Arpels. You'll see it loud and clear in Genlux next month.

When I interviewed Lydia the first time for Genlux, I found that she lived a pretty clean life. No smoking, drinking or drugs. And no reality television shows. That was 2010. Today, she is part of a reality show called The Face. She says it's like The Voice, only it's for models, so it's called The Face...get it? Naomi Campbell is on it, so one can only imagine the zaniness. Still living that clean life? We shall see.

Want to see some of our shots when we shot her back in 2010 with photographers BrakahaX2? Jessica Paster styled this one. Annie Ing did makeup and Robert Steinken was on hair. All with Celestine Agency.

This photo was pretty serendipitous. Taken before I'd interviewed her, we had no idea that she had a real love for bugs and that one entire wall of her New York city apartment was covered in rare specimens such as spiders, beetles and other creepy crawlers. Her favorite was an Egyptian Scorpion. True story.

The BrakhaX2 photo team, made up of famed shooter, Moshe Brakha, and his son, Eddie Brakha, are an odd duo. Odd in the sense that their set is completely pin-drop quiet. No music. And all of the team are dressed the same way—with button-down shirts—buttoned all the way up and bow ties. Moshe pretty much takes the photos—Eddie pretty much communicates with the subject. If Moshe wants the model to move in a certain way, he'll tell Eddie and then Eddie will tell the model. When we shot Cornelia Guest using this "system" she became very agitated, "Why don't you just communicate with me directly," she said. Maybe eery is a better term than odd. Listen, they know it and they revel in it. I first started working with Moshe many moons ago when we did an award-winning poster campaign for Honda Scooters. Also on that campaign was photographer Yoshi Ohara and Tom Keller, both of those guys are still around and doing great work.

Love this image. My favorite because Lydia looks great. the styling is amazing. The Alaia dress...Galiano glasses...the Sergio Rossi shoes...all great. The hair...perfect. Composition is brilliant.

To be honest, I'm torn about these images. I love the creativity and concepts, but I would have liked Lydia to look more, well, beautiful...or at least, pretty. It's hard to say if she did look her typical "beautiful self" that the images would be as strong. When it comes to the aesthetics of the face, I think I have a good ability to pick the best shots and make necessary changes to make them "right." In this series my obvious faves are the cover and the toilet shot. In these two, her face is still beautiful AND the concept remains clear. The others...not so much. With the Brakhas it's concept over beauty—every time. I think it was Charles Aames who said that the opposite of "beauty" is "vulgarity". I almost get a sense of both in some of these images. The last time I worked with the Brakhas was on the Beverly Center billboard campaign featuring Kendall Jenner. Back to my top models list tomorrow! Going to bed.

my top ten models of all time

When I asked Francois Nars who his favorite model of all-time was, he was quick to mention Linda Evangelista. Along with photographer Steven Meisel, Nars and Evangelista created some of fashion's most iconic images. Nars also told me that his aesthetic hasn't changed since he was about 8 years old—that the type of face he's drawn to has always remained the same. I would say that Linda is one of my favorties too. She was never afraid to change up her look—and drastically so. Along with Karen Mulder, Linda was my 90s fave.

Through the years, I've had the good fortune of working with some of my favorite models. One of the first was way back in 2007 when our cover model was Estella Warren. Estella was one of only 10 girls who have been the face of Chanel No. 5. She was in the commercial where she plays Little Red Riding Hood. I must have watched that commercial a thousand times. But more on her later.

Going back to my favorite models of all time, let's start with the 60s and 70s. Here, my favorites are Twiggy (of course), and Jean Shrimpton.

What a face! Jean Shrimpton. Those eyes!

thank you genlux. let the alchemy begin.

For me, Genlux is the ultimate alchemist's toolbox. One minute I can be inspired by nature, or art, or fashion, or a film, or a model, or an actress, or a photo, or a book, or a landscape, or even a rock, or an old coiled-up piece of rope, and the next, I can put together a fashion photo shoot based on what inspires me. Today I was inspired by all of the New York Fashion Week makeup looks. So many brilliant looks came into my email box, like this one from Dick Page, the artistic director of Shiseido Cosmetics. I immediately texted my friend Uzo to see if she wanted to do a beauty shoot for our upcoming issue showcasing the latest beauty looks. Uzo is the lead international makeup artist for NARS. She, just as immediately, texted me, 'SURE!' So, let the alchemy begin. Next, we'll pick a face. A photographer. A stylist. A hair stylist. A manicurist. More alchemy.

Here's the formula for the look above created by Shiseido Artistic Director Dick Page

Inspiration: “The collection is bold – evolving architectural shapes, panels of colors, and amazing color contrasts. She should look light in it.”

Eye: Lids got a hint of green-gold or pink using the NEW! for Fall 2014 Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trio in Static (BL215), offset by strong, natural brows.

Lip: “Super real” lips were created with a light dab of the NEW! for Fall 2014 Lacquer Rouge in Viola (RD728) and a slight highlight on the cupids bow with Luminizing Satin Eye Color Trio in Static (BL215).

Face/Cheek: Sheer and Perfect Foundation moisturizes for pure, gorgeous skin.

yes, genlux was on 'housewives of bh' last night

Last night, the segment of Housewives of Beverly Hills that featured our shoot with Lisa Vanderpump aired. Thanks to everyone who wrote to say they saw me—thanks for bringing this cringing moment to my attention. Is it wrong for me to say, I just can't watch that show? Not because we were on it, but because those women are way too negative, biting and upsetting. I guess it all makes for good reality tv, but I hate it. Especially not good for watching right before going to sleep. Not being hypocritical, I am excited that we had Lisa on the cover and that we could feature her. She really is the ONLY housewife of all of the Bravo 'Housewives' shows that we'd even consider having in Genlux. Unlike most – scratch that – all those on the show, LIsa's the only smart, sensible, well-mannered and self-controlled one.

Genlux has been asked numerous times to do a reality show. We even started the process with one of the most well-respected production companies. The wheels self-destructed when we realized the challenge we'd face with being in the luxury market and need to create a positive co-branding experience for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, etc. If someone out there could come up with a way to package Genlux in a positive light while still creating good-ratings—we'd been up for it.

Today I'm editing a few stories that we shot. One by photographer Jeff Berlin and one by photographer Geoff Ragatz. I'm also trying to piece together our issue release party hosted by Katheryn Winnick. The logistics of juggling talent, sponsors, venues, along with decor, alcohol, food, gift bags, models, hair and makeup, etc etc, can be challenging. John Sugrue, our events coordinator and I could tell you stories that would make your heart stop. Like when the venue in Beverly Hills finally confirmed on a Tuesday evening for an event on Thursday. Most would have thrown in the towel. Not us. It ended up one of our best events—we even had Katherine McPhee and her band perform—under snowflakes. It was the second time that Katherine performed for us. When it comes to Genlux parties, getting 300 people out within one day notice is never a problem.
